Monday afternoon, Stony Brook University’s Director of Athletics Jim Fiore announced that Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach Allison Comito had resigned her position effective immediately.

“I want to thank Jim Fiore for the opportunity he gave me to coach at Stony Brook, but at this time I feel that it is in my best interest and in the best interest of the women’s lacrosse program that we part ways,” Comito said. “I wish nothing but the best to my student-athletes and hope that they achieve all their goals in the future.”

Comito started with Stony Brook as interim head coach in November 2005 and was promoted to head coach on July 12, 2006. She led the Seawolves to the America East regular season title in 2007. Her record in six years was 42-54 and the team finished with a 4-11 overall record this season.

“I want to thank Coach Comito for her contributions to Stony Brook women’s lacrosse over the last six years and wish her the best as she plans for her future pursuits,” Fiore said. “We are committed to developing a Stony Brook women’s lacrosse program that has a national profile and annually competes for the America East Championship, and we look forward to finding a coach who will accomplish the goals we have set forth for the program.”

According to a press release by Stony Brook, the University will conduct a national search for Comito’s successor.

The announcement came just two days after the Men’s Lacrosse team was eliminated from contention for the NCAA tournament after their 11-10 loss to Hartford during the final second of the America East Championship game.

With Comito’s resignation and the departures of 11 seniors on the men’s team, including Conference Player of the Year and SBU’s all-time leading goal scorer Jordan McBride, former Conference Player of the Year Kevin Crowley, starting goalkeeper Rob Camposa, attackmen Tom Compitello and Brett Drost and midfielders Adam Rand and Timmy Trenkle, there are a lot of questions for SBU’s 2011-12 lacrosse campaign.
