Ashley McCarthy has been battling juvenile diabetes since she was a baby. She has suffered diabetic comas and scoliosis, and sometimes faces social troubles because of her illness. But through her struggles with the disease, Ashley has found a unique strength inside herself.

After a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the heart of Haiti in mid-January, many Stony Brook students sprung to action. One such humanitarian, Adal Regis, president of Rise Again Haiti at the university, sat down with the Stony Brook Independent to talk about the non-profit organization and his connection to the Caribbean nation.

Hearsay

A doctoral student in computer science at Stony Brook University is developing HearSay, a non-visual web browser that uses text commands, voice-browsing and keyboard shortcuts to give the blind and those with visual impairments a chance to navigate cyberspace.

The antiwar movement during the Vietnam War was led by scruffy professors, hippies, and disillusioned soldiers fresh from combat. The present antiwar movement is led by grieving mothers like Cindy Sheehan. She has spent the past few days camping in front of Bush’s Texas ranch, demanding an audience with him to ask what noble cause her son Casey died for in Iraq.

Currently an adjunct professor in the Biology department, Professor Matthew Schmidt received his Ph.D. in Genetics from Stony Brook University, and is also a professor at SUNY's Empire State College. One of the more popular professors among Stony Brook students, Schmidt recently sat down with the Independent for an interview:
