Matt McAllester

Matt McAllester's job never really ends, and it's by no means safe. He travels to faraway places and plants himself in the middle of danger - not as a soldier, but as a wartime journalist.

Ann Coulter 1

“Looks like the five dollar cover charge kept the liberals away,” joked Ann Coulter at the College Republican-sponsored event in the SAC Auditorium Monday night, to a crowd of students and members of the community. The audience laughed as she began her jarring string of comedic political witticisms on liberals, the ’08 campaign, terrorism and 9/11.

Walt

Most people who begin their workday by showing up at 10:30 in the morning only to plop their feet up on their desk while they surf around the internet and watch television are generally not the most productive workers. Such a morning routine is enough to get you fired - or, at the very least, merit a stern lecture from their boss. Unless you're Walt Handelsman.

“You can’t use that fountain,” the matron told the boy's mother as she tried to get him and his sister a drink during a visit to a Mississippi zoo. They could take a used bottle out back to fill up from a faucet, the matron said. Instead, the family waited for the matron to walk about a half mile away and used the fountain. When the matron saw the two young children drinking from the fountain, the family had to quickly leave the zoo or risk arrest.

Scott Higham

On Nov. 14 Washington Post and Pulitzer Prize winning reporter Scott Higham returned to Stony Brook University to participate in the School of Journalism’s “My Life As…” series, a place where he said he had some of the best years of his life. The Stony Brook graduate spoke to a packed Javits Lecture Center room about his passion for investigative reporting, and his role as a public servant.

At an event to increase awareness of hate crimes, Ruthanne Lum McCunn worried that the United States’ foreign policy is responsible for emotions that spawn such acts.
At the Oct. 4 USG senate meeting, an informal, non-binding decision was made by the senate to create a committee to address the issue of the off-campus trips policy.

Chinese Photojournalist Wen Huang held a My Life As event on Wednesday in Javits Lecture Hall at 8pm to talk about her experiences as a battlefield photojournalist in the Kosovo War and to showcase some of her work from the conflict.

Former managing editor of the Wall Street Journal and editor in chief of Time Inc., Norm Pearlstine spoke to Stony Brook University’s journalism students on Sept. 24 about his decision to turn over former Time reporter Matt Cooper’s notes in the Valerie Plame case.

Gym Class Heroes

Amid rain and a blackout affecting a swath of campus, Gym Class Heroes performed a 90 minute set organized by the Student Activities Board at the Sports Complex on April 15. This was the second concert hosted by the board this semester.

Women’s rights. Feminism. Gender stereotypes. Admit it, some of you roll your eyes when you hear these terms. And why shouldn’t you? They are overused, oversimplified, and not well explained.

Foodshow-2
The crowds were bustling and the napkins were rustling as the Student Activities Center played host to the annual “Taste of Stony Brook” food show last Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
GSEU Contract Forum participants2
Over two dozen Teaching Assistants and Graduate Assistants gathered at the Wang Center on Nov. 1 to set priorities for their next contract with New York State during the GSEU Contract Forum. Fifteen departments, from Economics to Philosophy to Physics, were represented at this meeting, hosted by the Graduate Student Employees Union (GSEU/CWA 1104 Educational Division).
Anthony Bourdain

Anthony Bourdain is clearly a fan of pork fat. Or duck fat. Or maybe both. Duck confit and Cassoulet were the dishes of the afternoon in a well attended event held in the SAC auditorium on October 11. The line to get in extended past both ballrooms.

Black History Month came to an end at Stony Brook University two weeks ago when the university held its annual Black History Month Closing Ceremony. Over 100 people were on hand to witness the event that took place in Student Activity Center Ballroom ‘A’. This year’s ceremonial theme recognized civil rights activist Rosa Parks who passed away in October last year.
