President Stanley

President Stanley fielded questions about budget cuts and looming tuition increases at Stony Brook, but outside the press conference a small protest stirred.

Eight months after the ceremonial groundbreaking for Stony Brook University’s new campus recreation center, construction fences ring the site and large mounds of dirt sit inside. Work officially began on Jan. 4 and is projected to take two years to complete, according to Dr. Susan DiMonda, associate dean and director of student life, leaving the facility with an anticipated opening sometime in 2012.

Plans for Stony Brook University’s proposed satellite campus in Songdo, South Korea are still in the works, but a lot depends on the South Korean government. "The major issue is financing," said Deputy Provost W. Brent Lindquist in an e-mail.

Zimpher

New York is facing great economic hardship. In response, Gov. David Paterson has instituted the Empowerment Act and SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher is working out a new strategic plan for the university system. At Stony Brook the topic was energy and sustainability, but she and President Samuel L. Stanley also weighed in on the governor's new legislation.

The SUNY Research Foundation recently added Stony Brook University President Samuel Stanley to their board of directors according to a press release on Jan. 12. The announcement puts President Stanley in a position that formerly held disputes with his own university’s Research Assistants Union.

Three weeks after sending out mass e-mails to university members warning about suspicious inbox messages, University Chief Information Officer Richard W. Reeder said there is not much more his department can do to protect campus Internet users beyond making them aware.

Songdo

Stony Brook University’s plan for a satellite campus in South Korea was a topic of much discussion for sophomore business major Sunny Kim, 21, and many of her friends. As international students from South Korea, their excitement was diluted by pointed skepticism.

Grad Students

The Graduate Students Employees Union and the Research Assistants Union united to greet President Samuel L. Stanley’s inauguration procession. The approximately 35 protestors braved the cold as they waited for their chance to confront Stanley.

President Samuel L. Stanley had his inauguration ceremony on Oct. 23 in front of over 2,000 members of the campus community. Stanley used his address to propose several initiatives he would like to carry out as the university’s president in the next few years, proposals which will surely be heavily debated in the near future.

Brookhaven Laboratories Joanna Fowler has been awarded the National Medal of Science for her research on different diseases effecting the brain, like addiction. She will recieve the award later this week at the White House.

During a meeting with student media, President Samuel Stanley distanced himself from the Five-Year Plan laid out by his predecessor, Shirley Strum Kenny. He said that while he would be likely to continue with some of her initiatives, he said that there are “particular things that interest me that I think I need to be incorporated into any plan” for the university’s future.

Press Conference Announcing Dr. Samuel L. Stanley as Next University President

This afternoon Dr. Samuel L. Stanley was officially named the next president of Stony Brook University. The announcement came at a press conference after a unanimous vote by the SUNY Board of Trustees, which took place earlier today.

New York State implemented a mandatory tuition increase for all SUNY and CUNY schools last year to help cover the statewide deficit. University President Shirley Strum Kenny has spent the last few weeks of her final semester at Stony Brook protesting these increases through the media, expressing her outrage to various news outlets and equating the recent tuition hikes to an education tax.

Earlier today Stony Brook University announced that Dr. Samuel L. Stanley Jr., currently the vice chancellor for research at Washington University in St. Louis, has been nominated to be the next president of the university. Members of the presidential search committee appear excited about the prospect of Stanley taking control of the school.
