Op-Ed

Governor David Patterson’s budget directive to freeze special revenue generated by state agencies, including Stony Brook, is unjustified and damaging. But at the same time it illuminates the limits Stony Brook has reached as a state-run institution and forces us to think outside the box when plotting its future.

College students and activists have made a mistake in Barack Obama—he’s not the candidate he first appeared to be.

Young primary voters gravitated to Obama unlike other Democrat nominees in the past....But we haven’t really received a new candidate and Obama is starting to look like the same old politicians that have alienated young voters for generations.

Do we still have student reporters on campus? I beg to differ.

"I had heard many stories about medical school being arduous, with medical students spending their days studying and having no real free time. I regret to inform you, my dear reader, that this is more or less the case..."

Ann Coulter Dinner

This past Monday, the College Republicans executive board and I had the opportunity to go out to dinner with the scourge of Stony Brook, Ann Coulter. And surprisingly, I had a good time.

Governor Eliot Spitzer came onto the public scene as a no-nonsense New York attorney general, busting up alleged corrupted Wall Street tycoons and, yes, prostitution rings.

The most passionate debate in student government this semester took place September 10, just before the USG Senate decided by a razor thin, one vote margin to continue a controversial elections practice. The Independent invited Nathan Shapiro and Amy Wisnoski to present the arguments for their rival legislation.

Peter Jennings passed away yesterday, due to lung cancer. He was 67 years old. Today, most news programs touched upon his legacy in some way; some more than others. CNN's Anderson Cooper, Paula Zahn and Aaron Brown, all ABCNews alumni, spent considerable time interviewing current and former ABCNews correspondents. Cooper and MSNBC's Keith Olbermann used Peter's death to focus on the dangers of cigarette smoking. ABCNews, obviously, paid solemn tribute to Jennings on World News Tonight and Nightline.  Even Fox News got into the act, as Bill O'Reilly interviwed Barbara Walters (and couldn't stop making ridiculous comparisons between Jennings and himself).

For years, Stony Brook Day in Albany has been an annual tradition, bringing together students and faculty for a unique opportunity to speak to their elected Legislators about issues that pertain to students and higher education in general, as well as an opportunity to get out of the classroom and take a one-day trip.
