Student Killed in Accident

By Michael Nevradakis
Editor-in-Chief

A tragic accident claimed the life of Stony Brook University undergraduate student Christopher Samaria, 22, from Queens yesterday, in the aftermath of the violent storm which affected our area on Sunday evening.

Samaria was killed when his Toyota minivan collided with a Mini Cooper at the intersection of Route 110 and the Long Island Expressway in Melville. While it has not been officially confirmed why the two automobiles collided, the earlier storm knocked out power to the traffic lights in the region and the driver of the Mini Cooper likely blew past a flashing red light, colliding with Samaria's van. The accident occurred at around 12:05 a.m. yesterday morning.

The driver of the Mini Cooper was identified by Suffolk County Police as James Candalino, 27, of Locust Manor. He was not seriously injured and was taken to North Shore Hospital, and was soon released, according to police.

Samaria was a pre-med student at Stony Brook, raised in Flushing, Queens but originally from Guyana.
