Disapproval and Opposition to Bush Administration and Iraq Occupation Grows

By Marcel Votlucka According to a CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll, six out of ten Americans oppose the war in Iraq, and the public in general is growing more dissatisfied with the progress of the “War on Terror.” This coincides with recent polls showing approval ratings for the President have plummeted to 40%. As a sign that this sentiment has found its way into the halls of power, fifty members of Congress are forming The Out of Iraq Congressional Caucus. Its mission is to lobby Congress and the White House to end the occupation of Iraq and bring US troops home. In addition, Republican Senators Chuck Hagel and John McCain offered harsh criticisms of the administration’s handling of the Iraq war and occupation. In reaction to Vice President Cheney’s assertion that the Iraqi resistance is dying out, Hagel said, “The reality is that we're losing in Iraq. . . . Things aren't getting better; they're getting worse.” McCain expressed similar sentiments; when asked if the resistance is dying down, he answered simply, “No.” Hagel further lashed out at the President, “The White House is completely disconnected from reality. It's like they're just making it up as they go along.” Meanwhile, 82 members of the Iraqi parliament sent a letter to the speaker of the house demanding that the US pull troops out of the country. |
