Summer at Stony: Week Three

The weeks continue to go by here on campus as classes blaze along at a pace that could make heads spins. Week three at Stony Brook University was relatively quiet, considering the first couple weeks, but still featured some unexpected events as only SBU can deliver. However, I can’t just not mention the epic amounts of rain that our area has been deluged under.

While I expected this summer to be like most on Long Island - humid, hot, and full of sun - it has been everything I feared. Day after day of upper 60 degree weather, bouts of light to heavy rain, and an ever present cloud cover has made this summer more depressing than I think I expected. Loneliness is one thing, but not even being able to go out for a walk or open the shades for a view of a starry night or sun shining sky have made being cooped up in the apartment a real morale killer. Of course, this isn’t normal weather. According to my dear sign language professor, she “heard” (keyword being that) that it was the rainiest season in New York since 1998. Go figure.

Classes presented me with little in the line of anything spectacular to speak of, but I did find a new cinematic love from my HIS 340, Modern India, class - Bollywood. We watched the movie Swaves and I cannot lie that I have a craving to watch more Indian-produced pictures. I swear that no CGI and effects blew Hollywood-style movies out of the water. Singing, romance, action, adventure - this movie had it all! My professor will be showing us another movie in a week or two and I cannot wait to see it! I’m really hoping to find that I enjoy foreign films more since recent American foods have been disappointing (Adventureland, anyone?).

Hopefully, the weather will improve next week so I can get out and take some photos for these blogs. I’d really like to show everyone how the campus does look when it’s not raining. The flowers are out, the trees are bloomed, and the new buildings - residence halls & a math and physics building - are going up amazingly fast.

I’ve been a bit behind, but don’t forget to follow along on Twitter under the trending topic “#summeratstony.” Feel free to tag your Stony summer experiences on there as well!
