Welcome, New Readers!

Stony Brook University: 1,100 acres. 22,000 students. Over 50 degree programs. Over 200 student-run clubs and organizations. Not very many parking spaces. Our university is obviously a hectic place, and at any given time, lots is going on. However, a common complaint that many students have about the university is that there isn't much happening on campus. In most cases, what this really means is that there are things to do, but not that many people are taking advantage of what is being offered.

This is why the Stony Brook Independent hopes to make a positive, worthwhile contribution to students' lives on campus. Our goal is to provide extensive, impartial coverage of news and events on campus, and of matters directly relevant to students.

We realize that as an upstart publication, we are competing against some very well-established student media organizations, including the Press, WUSB 90.1 FM, SBU-TV, Blackworld and the Statesman. However, we will strive to live up to our title, as an independent, objective source of news, information and entertainment.

As an online publication, our aim will be to provide up-to-date and relevant content that directly pertains to you, our reader. The Internet is the future of information, and we hope to build on the success of other online publications, to build a successful and well-respected source of news at Stony Brook that will serve students for years to come.

The Independent is open to any student that is interested in writing, copy editing, graphic design and layout, sports, cartooning, the arts, culture, or student life in general. No experience is necessary to join, and we will be happy to provide training and guidance for anyone who joins. We also invite students and student organizations to register as users of this website, and become a part of the Independent by contributing listings of campus events to our events calendar, which we hope will soon become a comprehensive list of everything that's happening on campus. Finally, we hope to develop our forum into a place of discussion open to the university community, where anything relevant to SBU and students lives can be discussed. Feel free to contact us for more information. Our e-mail address is sbindependent@gmail.com. We look foward to working with you!
