Men's Lacrosse Clinches Playoff Spot In Overtime
|
By William Lahti A goal by Kevin Crowley 15 seconds into overtime sent Stony Brook into the America East Conference tournament, in a 7-6 win over the Binghamton Bearcats. With Albany's win against Vermont on Sunday, it has been assured that the Seawolves will face the Albany Great Danes in the conference semifinal. UMBC's win against Hartford on Saturday secured them the #1 seed, and the right to host the tournament. On offense for SBU, it was all about the Canadian duo of Jordan McBride and Kevin Crowley, with each scoring 3 goals. McBride, who leads the team in scoring, has 37 goals for the year. Stony Brook made a change at goal for this game, with sophomore Rob Camposa replacing Alex Kajencki, who struggled in last week's game against Hartford. Camposa had 9 saves. McBride got things going with a goal with 7:18 to play in the 1st quarter. The Bearcats countered 6 seconds later, and scored again at the end of the quarter. Crowley and Michal Trojanowski In the final 15 minutes of regulation, Binghamton got close to scoring several times, but Camposa held firm at goal. Finally, with 1:45 left in regulation, Binghamton scored what could've been a game-winning goal, but SBU's Adam Rand won the ensuing face-off. It was picked up by Rhys Duch and after a wide shot by Bo Tripodi, Jordan McBride picked it up and scored the goal to re-tie the game at 6. It would stay that way through the end of regulation. In OT, Rand won the face-off, Duch picked the ball up and got it to Crowley, who put it in the net to seal the win. The Seawolves were successful in killing the 4 penalties they committed. They also had an edge on face-offs and ground balls. Both the women's and men's teams will face Hofstra at home on Tuesday, starting at 4 and 7 pm, respectively. MSG will once again televise the men's game. The men will close the regular season on Saturday with a game at Albany, ahead of their playoff meeting. |
