Seawolves Streamroll Red Foxes

By William Lahti

The Stony Brook Seawolves Men's Lacosse team bounced back from Saturday's heartbreak against Denver with a 14-4 win over the Marist Red Foxes.

Bo Tripodi drew first blood with a goal with 13:06 to play in the 1st quarter. At 8:14, Bobby Trenkle picked up a goal, assisted by #24, who picked up a turnover and took it down the field. Tripodi scored on an assist from Kevin Crowley at 6:30. Owen Adams scored at 1:26 with a long shot, to bring the score to 4-0 in a dominant first quarter for the Seawolves.

The second quarter was more balanced, though still in SB's favor. Josh Eustice scored at 11:21 to make it 5-0. At 6:52, Ryan Hughes scored to make it 6-0. The shutout was broken up by Keegan Blaney of Marist, with a goal with 2:17 to play in the quarter. They would take that score into halftime.

It only took 1:05 for SB to score in the third, with another goal by Trenkle. Tripodi scored at 11:14. Kyle Reny made it 8-2 on an unassisted goal. Rhys Duch countered for SB within seconds. With :48 left in the quarter, Marist made it 9-3. A goal by Trenkle from Tripodi at a very crowded crease made it 10-3. It was followed up by a goal by Hughes from Trenkle to give SB an 8-goal lead with one quarter left to play.

Things turned ugly in the fourth quarter. Marist blew a huge opportunity early in the quarter when SB went 2 men down. Not only did they fail to score, but one of their own players got 1 minute for slashing. A fight broke out at 11:26, resulting in 2 Seawolves and one Red Fox getting 1-minute penalties for unnecessary roughness. Many SB starters came out, with the game in hand. Chris Scott got another SB goal, with an assist from fellow freshman Timmy Trenkle. Marist took their fourth goal of the game with 4:13 left to play. Following the goal, SB goalie Alex Kajencki came out of what was probably his best game to date and was replaced by freshman John Bella.

The Seawolves dominated on offense. They had 26 shots on goal to Marist's 17. SB held their own on face-offs, their downfall against Denver, taking half of the 22 face-offs. In the first half, they cleared the ball every chance they got. Tripodi finished the day with 4 goals. The big surprise was when breakout star Jordan McBride didn't have a single point, and saw less action than usual, presumably due to the wide margin of the game.

After the game, Head Coach Rick Sowell said it was “good to get the bad taste out of our mouth.” On Kajencki, he said, “He's getting better. The game's starting to slow down for him.” About the upcoming game against UMBC, he said “we like our chances,” though he acknowledged that they are a strong team.

Stony Brook opens conference play on Saturday at 7:30PM when they go on the road to play a crucial game against #13 UMBC.
