Rain Floods First Floor of West Apartments Building
|
By Rachel Young Building C in West Apartments started flooding around three suites on the first floor at the back entrance tonight at approximately 10:45 p.m. Residents said they called maintenance, who deemed the situation an emergency, but did not show until an hour later. Eric Yu, a resident in one of the affected suites, said this incident isn't the first -- he added that there was a flood on Feb. 13. “It was bound to rain again,” he said. A resident assistant in the building who did not want to be identified said he told the residence hall director of the building that something had to be done, but the director surveyed the flood and said it was not an emergency. “I told him flat out that it was an emergency,” the resident assistant said. “I also told him that when a toilet is clogged, maintenance considers that an emergency.” A maintenance worker arrived at the scene at around 11:45 p.m. but didn’t stay long enough to comment. But Yu said maintenance told them they “can’t do anything until the rain stops.” “That means it’s just going to get deeper,” he said. “Ridiculous.” Residents attribute the cause of the flood to a clogged drain. The water, about half an inch deep, was mixed with leaves and wood chips. They said water was beginning to seep through the walls between suites. Students constructed makeshift barricades at the entrance to their suites out of cardboard boxes and cartons of bottled water. |
