|
By Michael Kelly On March 1, Senior Day, the Stony Brook men’s basketball team (6-22) fell to the Binghamton Bearcats, 49-44 in their final regular season game. It was the last home game for Ricky Lucas, Mitchell Beauford, and Emanuel Neto. The trio scored 10, 10 and 9, respectively. The Seawolves jumped out to an early 15-6 lead in the first eight minutes, but suffered through a cold streak for the rest of the first half. The Bearcats ended the first half on a 16-2 run, led by the hot shooting of guard Richard Forbes (16 points) who hit two three-point field goals to close the first half, and entered the intermission leading 22-17. In a defensive-minded second half, Stony Brook charged back to take a 31-30 lead on a basket by Demetrius Young. After trading baskets for a few minutes and with the Seawolves trailing 36-35, the Bearcats took over the contest by going on an 11-5 run to stretch their lead to a score of 47-40. Stony Brook never seriously challenged again, falling 49-44. Lucas and Beauford led the team in scoring, with 10 points a piece. Mike Gordon added 15 points for the visiting Bearcats. Stony Brook next plays in the opening round of the America East Tournament on Friday, March 7. They will play the Black Bears of Maine, at Binghamton University. In the teams’ last match-up, Stony Brook beat the Black Bears 56-51. |
