Armed Man at Large on Academic Mall, According to SB Alert
|
By Matthew Weinberger Stony Brook University Police have issued a warning over the SB Alert system that "a black man in a black coat" has been spotted on the academic mall with what is suspected to be a firearm, though that has yet to be confirmed. The suspect is now reported to be approximately 25 years of age. He fled the SAC cafeteria in the direction of Harriman Hall and displayed what is now assumed to be a handgun. Students have been advised not to leave whatever room they are in until the situation has been resolved. In addition, there are reports of police not letting anyone new into academic buildings from the outside. The official SB Alert website has more information at http://stonybrook.edu/sb/emergency/alerts.shtml UPDATE (3:39pm): An SB Alert text message confirms that the police have not caught the suspect and have stopped the intensive search for now, giving the "all clear." Classes are not canceled. Updates when we know more. Keep an eye on the comment thread for fresh information and links to other resources. |

Updates
First, and most importantly, I hope that everyone is safe and out of harm's way.
Even though I am no longer an SBU student, I am still apparently on the university's alert system. The first text message alert was sent out at 2:09 pm, followed by the same text message again two minutes later, at 2:11 pm.
A pre-recorded (but personalized!) voicemail from Richard Reeder followed a few minutes later, then another duplicate of the text message alert at 2:31 pm. A call was then placed from the Emergency Notification System from mir3.com, an emergency alert system used by many organizations for disseminating information during emergency/disaster situations (866-609-8026) just a few moments ago. A fourth duplicate text message alert just went out at 2:53 pm. Another call from the emergency notification number then followed at 3:01 pm.
As of 2:50 pm or so, there is also an update on the University's webpage: http://stonybrook.edu/sb/emergency/alerts.shtml.
There seems to be conflicting word regarding lockedowns on campus. The original reports I heard on WUSB were that the Wang and Humanities buildings were locked down. Later I heard on WUSB that no buildings are under lockdown. Now I am hearing from a University staff person that the SAC and some other buildings are being locked down, and the Union (home of WUSB and the Independent and the other campus media organizations, among other things) is in the process of being locked down.
