Michael Vick Sentenced Today
|
Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was sentenced to 23 months in prison and 3 years probation for his role in a dogfighting operation. Vick's career seemed promising when he was the first African American quarterback to be taken with the first overall pick by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2001 NFL Draft. He has had a short career playing in only 74 games, but he has completed over 50 percent of his passes in the NFL. He has also thrown for over 11,000 yards and 71 touchdowns. He is, of course, known more for his running ability from the quarterback position than his arm. Vick appeared in court in black and white prison attire. U.S. District Court Judge Henry E. Hudson and prosecutors believed that he had not accepted responsibility for his role in the incident. Vick recently tested positive for marijuana and originally lied about his role in the killing of the dogs used in the fights. Judge Hudson explained to Vick that such an operation could not have existed if it wasn't for his support, mainly financial, to explain the stern ruling. Vick's future in the NFL is uncertain. Once he serves his sentence he could potentially petition the league to be re-instated. Although, there is no guarantee that he would be signed by a team, or that he could compete again after such an extended absence from the game. |
