Tigers land Cabrera and Willis in 8 player trade

The Detroit Tigers announced officially today that they have acquired third basemen Miguel Cabrera and left-hander Dontrelle Willis from the Florida Marlins for six prospects.

The prospects include outfielder Cameron Maybin, catcher Mike Rabelo, and pitchers Andrew Miller, Eulogio De La Cruz, Burke Badenhop, and Dallas Trahern.

This is the biggest trade so far in this year's winter meetings and make the Detroit Tigers a serious contender for the World Championship.

The deal also finishes off Florida's fire sale on players from their World Championship team in 2003. Cabrera and Willis were the only remaining players from the team that beat the New York Yankees. Deals like this are not new to the Marlins as they had a similar turnover from their 1997 championship team also.

Many analysts feel that unless the Yankees or Red Sox pull off a trade for Minnesota Twins pitcher Johan Santana, who has been the most coveted player in the Winter Meetings, the Tigers may be the best all-around team in baseball.
