|
The funeral for Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor was held today at Florida International University Arena. Taylor was shot and killed on November 29th in his home. According to the Associated Press, thousands of people packed in to say goodbye to a professional, a teammate, or even simply a friend. Most notably in attendance where the Washington Redskins, along with coach Joe Gibbs, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Reverend Jesse Jackson, former NFL great O.J. Simpson, and actor Andy Garcia, whose niece, Jackie, was dating Taylor and in the home when he was shot. Redskins running back and close friend of Taylor, Clinton Portis, described the safety's play as invigorating and went on to say that having him on the team was exciting. Jesse Jackson called for an end to the violence and Roger Goodell described this as a "sad week" for the league family. All NFL games observed a moment of silence this past weekend to mourn Taylor's passing. On Sunday, Washington fielded 10 players on their first defensive play of the game as a sign of respect to Taylor and to symbolize that he will always be with him. This is undoubtedly a tragedy and the players, fans, and friends of Sean Taylor will miss watching #21 do the thing he loved so much to do...play football. |
