Laptop Woes: XP WiFi Drivers on Acer Travelmate 2480

I got a new laptop and I needed to get the wireless working on XP (It came with vista-- I won't be havin none of that!)

The official drivers on the acer site are broken. They come up with a "device cannot start" error and a scary exclamation point.

After a few hours of searching (which I hope to save you) I found these drivers (in hilariously bad English), which work on the TM2480-2196.

The problem apparently was that the other drivers recognized the card as Atheros AR5006X. When you use the right drivers it works as a AR5007EG.

Go figure.

Hi,

I found your blog comment while searching for an Atheros 5006x XP driver for my TM 2480. The AR5007EG info may be the vital clue and thank you for that. However, I could not get the "These drivers" link to work. Could you give me a link in plain text? I too got sick of Vista problems (slow, app incompatibility, final straw was that my good old Dragon 7 wouldn't work and Vista voice recognition had me verify every frigging sentence I dictated) and upgraded to XP. Laptop is working nice except for that Atheros driver. I purchase systems for clients and have sold many Acers because of their price and (for me) reliability But the support website is the worst I have seen for a major manufacturer. The driver support is a mishmash of out dated crap. My biggest revelation was that the drivers that come with the laptop are always years ahead of the web site "updates". Unfortunately, all got with this guy were the vista drivers.

Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

The link you provided does not work. I tried contacting Acer Support but they told me its a software problem and Acer only provides hardware support. I am tried of Windows XP Drivers problems, may be I should get a Mac.
