CMJ Part 1: Marnie Stern, Mika Miko
So in my duties as assistant program director at WUSB, I was part of our delegation to CMJ 2007, an awesome collection of showcases going for almost a week at venues throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn. So I missed Tuesday, the first day but on Wednesday (Oct. 17) I went over to the Blender Theater at Gramercy to see Xiu Xiu. I was never really a big fan of them-- the music is too irregular to listen to for pleasure-- but the performance was stellar. Also playing there that night were Marnie Stern (awesome) and Mika Miko, an all-girl punk band that sang into a telephone (I would find later that it wasn't that special, even though they built it themselves) I'll be writing a blog entry for my picks from each night... when I get around to it. I also took photos. |
