The Zebra Path turns Red Hot

The Zebra Walk is hotter than it's ever been. Or something.
The Zebra Path is red hot. Or something.

The Zebra Path was cordoned off for most of today while the black stripes were painted over with bright red to match the "Stony Brook is Red Hot" propaganda machine.

In the words of two thugs I overheard while taking this picture:

"Yo, it's the Zebra Path, not the candy-cane walk!"
"Word. "

i think it's stupid too. maybe they should rename it to peppermint path!

Maybe this is part of stony brook's efforts to make the campus a happy place. It'll certainly fit right in during the holiday season. Maybe SSK should dress as Santa and students will line up along the path to sit on her lap and tell her their Christmas wishes :)

Thanks for the idea... poll updated with a new choice.

Stony Brook has gone from an anemic sloth colony to a bloodthirsty vampire bureaucracy in short order.

Wear garlic, kids.

Hahahaha @ Peppermint Path. I was reminded of Candy Land... "take a stroll through Sugarplum Activities Center through Peppermint Path to get to the Unicorn Union."

Dear Stony Brook Marketing Department,
Please consider laying off the psychedelics.

I think we're all overlooking the fact that the 90th anniversary of the October Revolution is fast approaching. Stony Brook has obviously chosen to commemorate this with a visual representation of the clash between the Whites and the Reds.

See the upcoming issue of the Press if I decide to write more along these lines...

It makes me dizzy yet at the same time I want to lick it.

Zebra Path
The Zebra Path is a black-and-white geometric walkway connecting the Academic Mall with northern sections of campus beyond John S. Toll Drive. The eye-catching path lies in front of the Career Center and behind the Melville Library. In March 1981, as part of an advanced seminar in public art, Stony Brook student Kim Hardiman won a grant to beautify the campus. Her 232x12-foot handpainted walkway, regularly refurbished with new coats of paint, constitutes one student's lasting tribute to the Stony Brook campus

R.I.P. Zebra Path!

This is what happens when President Kenny hires The White Stripes as PR people. Icky Thump Lane is more like it.

It looks like a waving flag to me! All we need are the stars ...

All we need are buckets at regularly spaced intervals for people that get nauseous, and we'll be set.

I am the original artist for the Zebra Path. I wasn't trying to represent a zebra when I originally painted it in 1981. I participated in a public art class taught by Professor Mel Pekarsky. I wanted to leave a unique painting on the ground to beautify the campus and to allow everyone to experience it while walking on it. I painted the path black and white because the lines had an interesting optical illusion. I was so surprised to see my path change colors to join Stony Brook's "Red Hot" anniversary theme. I hope everyone can still enjoy walking on the path even though it looks like a red and white candy-cane lane now. At least, my public artwork is alive when people can still talk about it and walk on it. This recent change also reminds me of the sand mandalas created by Tibetan monks. They remind all of us that all things in life will change, nothing is permanent. I continue to paint at annual street painting festivals in Florida, but I use chalk now. Please send me any comments if you want to talk to the original artist of the Zebra Path! Kim Hardiman 10-27-07
