Wolfie's Opening Night
Wolfie's on opening night

Wolfie’s, the new restaurant located upstairs in the Union, officially opened Monday. Donated sports equipment from the athletic department decorates the walls. Volleyballs, lacrosse helmets and jerseys are displayed in frames and glass boxes. The walls are painted red and flat screen televisions will soon be showing sports games and DVDs of past Stony Brook games.

According to Angela Agnello, director of marketing and communications of the Faculty and Student Association, all renovations cost a little under $100,000 and the only kink they need to work out is the lighting because of backordering issues.

Wolfie’s currently employs 25 students who make $7.15 an hour plus tips. According to records, the restaurant served a total of 227 customers for dinner from 6-10 p.m. on opening day. Tuesday, which includes lunch from 12-2 p.m., served a total of 387 customers. The restaurant is opened during those hours on weekdays.

During Wednesday’s lunch, Kayne West’s new hit “Stronger” blasted from the kitchen as customers poured in. Some high-top tables line the walls and Wolfie’s head decorates the surfaces. Even Wolfie himself paid a visit to those dining. But the essence of Stony Brook doesn’t stop there. The placemats have Stony Brook sports trivia on them along with game schedules. A “locker box” is also displayed on the wall with sports memorabilia donated by Joe Nathan, a Stony Brook alum and closing pitcher for the Minnesota Twins.

“You have a little bit of everybody here,” said Lisa Ospitale, director of marketing for campus dining, “Even though it’s athletic-themed, it’s Stony Brook.”

According to both Agnello and Ospitale, feedback about the food and portions has been positive. Their aim was to offer large portions for a good value. The cheapest item on the menu is the appetizer of hummus and pita triangles for $2.50; the most expensive is the Wolfie wing appetizer for $6.89.

The most popular entrees are the chicken parmesan and the pasta dishes, which also include a house salad and garlic bread. Although takeout is not offered yet, a lot of students are leaving full and with doggie bags. The brownie sundae seems to be the most popular dessert so far and each day a Cheesecake Factory cheesecake is featured.
