Virginia Tech Shootings Prompt Town Hall Meeting at Stony Brook

By Alex Berkman Stony Brook University held a town hall meeting to address the issues of new security precaution in the massacre at Virginia Tech. The meeting, on April 22 in the Student Union, was hosted by a panel including President Shirley Strum Kenny, Dean of Students Jerry Stein, Vice President of Student Affairs Peter Baigent, CIO Richard Reeder and Assistant Chief of University Police Doug Little. The panel discussed many security concerns and plans to be taken in the near future. One of the security precautions being taken at Stony Brook University will be the “Behavioral Assessment Committee,” said Stein. He said the new program will allow students and faculty to report people that they suspect are unstable, distressed, disturbed or are causing problems. |



I'd love to know more
I'd love to know more details about this "behavioral assessment committee." Judging by my past experience with the campus judiciary and university police, when I faced threats against me at the hands of my roommates and suitemates, I don't hold much optimism for this initiative. I lived with people, on campus, who made threats against my life and who had weapons found in their dorm room, and NOTHING HAPPENED. In fact, I was the one treated like a criminal for even bringing it up. More to come, once I graduate...
