Furry CONSPIRACY?
|
So if you recall I went to a Furry panel on the first night of ICON and they sorta told me what's up. But the next day I had done my homework and looked up some some references I heard mentioned (and wrote my first blog about it), and I managed to bump into one of them from the panel elsewhere on campus. "So, I found out what that word means," I said. "Oh, uh, yeah, we don't tell media about that stuff." The word was "yiff" and it was on her shirt. When I went to take a picture of her, she turned it backwards so it wouldn't be in the shot. Now, I don't really have enough information for this to make sense but intentionally hiding such a fundamental aspect of culture seems... fishy. |
Yeah, Kemeeleon got it dead-on.
I really am a camera-friendly person, and was very proud of my home-made yiff shirt. However, the others in the room were kinda edgy about me wearing it so boldly, and i dunno if you heard them telling me to block it or not..but they did xD Didn't wanna piss off any of em, so I complied. THOUGH I WOULD BE GLAD TO COME BACK WITH MY YIFF SHIRT FOR A PHOTO SHOOT :D
Kidding.
Or am I.
Wahaha.
Quite fascinating.
I mean, as an outsider, I sense a lot of really weird emotion from people when it comes to furries. People were hating on me just for talking about it.
I'm sorry I didn't get to see the documentary.
Deviants or not though, you were all very friendly. Thanks for weighing in on this!

Oh, those silly furries.
Hi; I ran the Furs Control the Media Panel on Friday. =D
The fandom is so accustomed to bad press that most members are terribly afraid of it. The term "yiff" was originally generally used as a silly, cute word for "sex" or "sexy" in the fandom -- until the first 'bout of silliness with MTV and Vanity Fair that popularized the word in the mainstream.
However, there are enough people with the same smart-ass, self-depreciating sense of humor in the fandom that the original meaning has been supplanted and it is now often used in terms of self-parody, in particular thanks to the frequent use of it by the media and internet trolls.
Unfortunately, there are equally as many people in the fandom with the view that "OMGWHATAREYOUDOINGYOUSHOULDNEVERTELLANYONEOUTSIDEOFTHEFANDOMABOUT THATSORTOFTHINGWHATTHEHELLAREYOUCRAZYZOMGGGGGGG!" knee-jerk reaction that, at times (such as this) do more harm than good.
As you may have guessed from my panel on Friday, I'm a member of the former group, as was my friend in the "Yiff" shirt. Having made a rather nonsensical (and popular) mockumentary on the fandom, I'm consistently butting heads with people in the latter group, which mostly consist of the older crowd that has gone through the media fiascos of the fandom's early years.
She was uncomfortable because the knee-jerks had given her a thourough chewing-out over her decision to be silly and have the slogan on her attire.
