The Sugary Smell of Springtime

Remnants of the winter

A while ago, my friend Alex sent me a text message in the midst of a lovely day.

“god bless the daylight, the sugary smell of springtime.”

These lyrics, part of Death Cab for Cutie’s song “We Looked Like Giants”, made me feel nice. Spring was around the corner! This was a few weeks ago, during that streak of awesome in-the-60’s weather, and it just felt like finally things were looking up.

And then it snowed. Ice all over the campus, muddy trails, puddles everywhere. Things were back to gloomy and cold, dark and dreary.

But now, as I look outside my window in Irving college, it’s really not that bad. The sun is beaming, patiently melting all the rock-hard ice on the grass and on the concrete. People are walking around in light jackets, laughing, smiling, and talking exuberantly.

You don’t see any of that in the winter. It’s always an odyssey to get somewhere on campus, beating against the wind, with shoulders hunched, hands shoved in pockets, all bundled up.

But now is a great time to shed everything ugly the winter bore.

Maybe there will be less USG drama this season, and maybe the Independent will finally get an office. Maybe some fresh faces will join. I urge you all to do so!

And I conclude with a Death Cab lyric:

“…And let the sun wrap its arms around me
And bathe my skin in water cool and cleansing
And feel, feel what its like to be new.”- Soul Meets Body
