Two female students have reported that they were sexually assaulted by two men they were visiting in a residence hall. Only one of the perpetrators was a student and was immediately suspended, according to Deputy Chief of Police Doug Little.

The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday evening and the victims immediately went to campus police on Sunday.

“I believe all the parties were acquaintances,” said Little. “I think these two young ladies were courageous in coming forward and under the circumstances of such a violent crime.”
An extensive investigation is being conducted by Suffolk County Police in co-operation with University Police.

Campus staff have met with both women and have provided support services and advised them of the counseling and other resources available to them.

Chief Little said he believes there is no threat to the campus community. “Obviously we wanted to get the information out there so that students would be informed.”

We know it is important for you to have accurate information.  We
also recognize that there is an obligation to protect the privacy of
our students. Based on what we know at this time, we  believe there
is no threat to other students and staff. However, complaints such
as these serve as a reminder that students should exercise caution
and that University Police and campus staff are here to assist
them. The safety and welfare of students is our paramount concern.

The University provides a number of resources to assist and support
students. The Wo/Men's and Gender Resource Center (WGRC) offers
confidential support and counseling services to victims of sexual
assault. Those interested in the WGRC services should contact 2-9666.

Thank you.
